I call my belly tenant Scout, but that's just a maternal nickname. We still have a major task of coming up with Scout's legal name. As if that isn't difficult enough, my boss had to give me (well, she gave it to me more for A ) this article to read: Tricky Job - Choosing the Right Name For Your Child by Teh Kok Tiong. She just had to remind me that Scout will have a Chinese name.

As I was going through the article, I realized that it's a lot more complicated than I thought (aside from requiring a geomancer's input). From what I've heard, so far, different Chinese families have their own take of choosing the names:

1. the name would be the trait or personality that you want your child to have
2. if a geomancer is involved, the name would be dependent on the element your child lacks based on the exact date of birth
3. the name that comes after the last name would tell you what generation in the family your child belongs to

As for the author or the article, he used the first two items. He made it more complicated (for me) when he explained how he chose the characters as it apparently involves how the character is written.

Let's take one of the characters used in the article: jia. According to the article, it means "excellent" or "joyful." Here's how it is written in Chinese:

The author explains that the character is composed of three other characters:

(meaning "auspicious")

(signifies power or energy)

(meaning "mouth")
He further explains that by incorporating "li" and "kou" in the name would give their child the "ability to articulate well and powerfully as well as to eat good and well." Now this can be a double whammy for me since my genes alone contains the ability to yack and eat a lot hahaha Though I'm seriously considering including "jia" as part of Scout's Chinese name (I hope my in-laws and geomancer will allow me to use it). I'll leave the rest of the character choosing to them.

I'll go back to the supposedly easier part of choosing an English name.
