I don't think I'd ever get tired of watching various culinary shows. When A used to work in the night shift, I usually keep the TV on to keep Snuz and I company. Your Japanese Kitchen was one of the shows that I would watch everyday.

I don't get to watch it much now since A keeps us company in the evenings. Watching Your Japanese Kitchen just makes you want to learn more about Japanese cooking and actually try getting your hands on it. So, that's what I ended up doing.
A and I were on a date in Little Tokyo yesterday. Since we were in the vicinity, I thought I'd make something special for him at home. So, we got a few things from Choto Stop and New Hatchin:

I went for okonomiyaki because I thought it has a more forgiving cooking method as compared to takoyaki or sushi. Plus, the name of the dish itself is more than enough clue that it's good for beginners. Okonomiyaki comes from two words: "okonomi" meaning "what you like" and "yaki" means grilled. So, if I have the basic ingredients, I can put whatever I have left in the fridge and still call it a meal haha

That being said, here's what we have (clockwise): green onions, shrimps, leftover lechon kawali, egg, shredded cabbage. I was hoping for some octopus, but I couldn't find one available in S&R. They sometimes have takoyaki-cut octopus available. Maybe next time, I guess. I just have to make do with what I have in the kitchen.

Now that I have all my ingredients in place, I just have to follow the recipe in the okonomiyaki flour package:

I was always a fan of reading instructions with pictures =). The basic batter recipe pretty much says:

1 pack (200g) of okonomiyaki flour
1 egg
1 1/2c water

Mix the 3 ingredients, then add whatever you want. The okonomiyakis that I've tried have green onions and cabbage. Cook the mixed batter like you would a pancake.

Top with okonomiyaki sauce (in our case, unagi sauce that we bought from New Hatchin for just Php11 per single pack), kewpie mayo, and bonito flakes.

This batch produced 6 ladlefuls of batter. I think I just got myself a new recipe to play with!
