DIY: Eagle Scout Moment using Krispy Kreme Message Doughnuts

A colleague's son was promoted to Eagle Scout over the weekend. She asked me a few weeks back to help her come up with an edible celebration piece. I immediately said cakes and cupcakes, but I was given a budget. So, I had to come up with something else.

I was on my way home via EDSA that day when I saw Krispy Kreme's bilboard for this:

I thought, this should be an interesting project for me.
To give you an idea on what types of designs Krispy Kreme usually offers with this promo, you can take a look at this:

Their message doughnuts, more of beignets, can be offered plain with no white chocolate coating, with white chocolate coating, and with white chocolate coating covered in rainbow sprinkles. Messages can be in letters and/or shapes (chocolate outline with inner shade in red).

Bearing that in mind, I started designing the layout of the message doughnuts for the Court of Honor Ceremony and ended up with this:

It's an 80-pc doughnut design highlighting scout colors and the name of the soon-to-be Eagle Scout. The Boy Scouts of America in Manila is Troop 351. So, I've added that into the layout as well.

Since Krispy Kreme can do the lettering, shapes (but not the logo), and the red portions of the design, I just have to worry about the blue portions and the logo. Going through my kitchen stuff, I found edible colors.

Good thing I have both the red and blue one. I was thinking of just painting on the logo and blue colors on the beignets.

A day before the event I got an email from Krispy Kreme sending me a photo of what they can deliver. I was happily surprised that they did the blue portions as well. It means less task for me to work on the following day.

They made a fresh, new batch for us on the day of the event which I picked up first thing in the morning. I brought it home with me so that I could paint on the logo using a stencil, and lipstick brush. Yes, you read it right, I used a lipstick brush because I couldn't find a small enough brush at almost 9PM day before the event. My fault since I kept putting the task off until the last minute.

Final output looked like this:

Phoned up my colleague and she came over to pick up the beignets. We're both very grateful to Krispy Kreme for accommodating our request and going the extra mile to bring us closer to the design that we have in mind.

I got a text later that afternoon from another colleague who was there at the Court of Honors saying that the beignets were a hit. It was actually his initially stupid idea to serve doughnuts to the event. I wouldn't have even thought of serving that to an event at the US Embassy. I just went along with it because he knows his scouts much more than I do. Good thing I eventually agreed to the idea.

Everyone happy.
