I STARTED A JOKE, BUT THE JOKE WAS ON ME

Writing prompt for the day: Talk about the best prank you ever pulled.

I'm no prankster, but I love making surprises. Among the surprises that I've tried to pull, this one required the assistance of people from another continent and one of the top chocolatiers in the world. Yet somehow, this nipped me back in the butt.

This happened a few years back. So, here's the scenario:
- guy's overseas for an event by himself
- went together with some colleagues (who brought their respective significant others to spend Valentine's Day in one of the most beautiful places in the world)
- I sort of feel sorry that he may be alienated with all the love going around on the most romantic day of the year

What to do?
This was quite tricky since I have to be subtle about it enough not to ask for help from his colleagues to avoid rumors. I wasn't also sure on what to give him because I'm not exactly sure what he likes. What I do know is that he's in the place where one can find the best avant-garde chocolatier according to Food and Wine, Enric Rovira. So, I thought that giving him one of the best things in the world might be nice.

I sent an email to his hotel and asked if they have access to Enric Rovira's shop and gave the purpose of my query. They were quite enthusiastic to help me pull it off that they insisted that they pay for the chocolates.

The hotel got him a box of Enric Rovira's concept chocolate, Planetarium, which costs around Eu60 that time.

I still insisted to pay for it considering it costs an arm and a leg, but the hotel was so into the whole in-a-romatic mood season that they refuse to accept my payment. I was like "Can I have the chocolates for myself???"

I've requested them to place the chocolates on top of his pillow on Valentine's Day and to keep me anonymous. I'm not sure how he would react to it anyway.

The hotel sent me a confirmation on the delivery of the chocolates, but didn't hear anything from the him. So, it was a waiting game on what happens next.

Fresh from his overseas trip a few days after, he had his large suitcase with him. He was handing me a box of something and was apologizing that it got a bit squished in the suitcase. When I looked at what he was handing me, it was the chocolate that I got for him! I was giving it back to him and told him that the person who made the chocolate is one of the best in the world. He said that all the more that I should take it because he knew I would appreciate it more.

I was the one ending up surprised...
